1:1 wheel throwing
Service Description
Join this one-to-one wheel throwing class in Edinburgh and experience the magic of the pottery wheel in a fully personalised, two-hour session designed entirely around you. With your tutor's undivided attention, you'll learn to centre, open, and pull clay into a beautiful, functional cup, completely from scratch. If your looking for a date night and want it to be a booking for 2, send me a message and I’ll sort! This workshop is a great place to start, and there's absolutely no experience needed. It's perfect for first-timers who want to switch off for a couple of hours and have some hands-on fun. Your teacher will provide supportive guidance every step of the way, making it easy to ease any creative anxiety and get stuck into the process. How your session works: Welcome and setup – Arrive, get your apron on, and settle in. Your tutor will walk you through the plan for the session and answer any questions before you begin. Introduction to the wheel – Get comfortable at the wheel and learn how it works. Your tutor will explain speed, posture, and hand positioning so you feel confident before touching the clay. Wedging your clay – Before throwing, your tutor will show you how to prepare your clay by wedging it to remove air bubbles and create an even consistency ready to work with. Centring – The foundation of everything on the wheel. With your tutor guiding your hands, you'll learn to push and brace the clay into a perfectly centred mound, the essential first step to any thrown piece. Opening and forming the base – Once centred, you'll open up the clay to create the floor of your cup, setting the shape and thickness of the base. Pulling the walls – The most satisfying part. Using steady, controlled movements, you'll draw the clay upward, building the walls of your cup taller and thinner with each pass. Shaping your cup – Refine the form, adjust the width, and give your cup its final shape. Your tutor will help you add your own personal touch to make it truly yours. Finishing and signing – Trim the base, smooth any rough edges, and sign the bottom of your piece. Your tutor will take it from here to dry and fire in the kiln. Choose your glaze – Before you leave, pick your glaze colour and finish from our range. Your tutor will talk you through how each one looks once fired so you can picture the final result. Everything you need is provided in the studio, including all clay, tools, an apron, and the glazing and kiln-firing services.
